Understanding your world: Sensory profiling

Discover how understanding sensory needs can transform daily life for neurodivergent individuals and those around them.

What is sensory profiling?

Sensory profiling involves a comprehensive assessment of an individual's sensory needs across all senses to pinpoint areas of difference. Each person can be sensory seeking, over-responsive, or under-responsive in different senses. Identifying these differences allows for the design and implementation of a targeted sensory diet. At Practical SEND Solutions, each sensory profile is completed with the individual at heart. Rather than simply providing a generic list of strategies, I consider the individual's age and interests. For children, I assess their engagement in formal learning or continuous provision environments. For adults, I consider their workplace and design adjustments that seamlessly integrate with their lifestyle, promoting sustainable well-being and productivity.

Targeted sensory diets

Each sensory diet is tailored to the individual's age and interests. For children, it is adapted to their educational setting, whether formal education or continuous provision.

Regulation and well-being

A sensory diet is a vital tool for regulating the sensory system, particularly useful for individuals who 'mask' at school or work, and then experience burnout at the end of the day.

Advocacy and support

It is a useful tool for advocating for a child's needs in school or for adults to advocate for reasonable adjustments in the workplace.

Who benefits from sensory profiling?

Sensory profiling can support all stakeholders, from parents and schools to individuals, leading to a more positive and regulated environment.

For parents

Sensory profiling helps parents understand their child's behaviour, enabling them to act proactively rather than reactively. This understanding can regulate their child and have a positive impact on wider family life.

For schools and educational settings

More regulated pupils contribute to a more positive learning environment for both the individual with sensory differences and the wider school community.

For individuals

Individuals benefit through a greater sense of regulation and well-being, enabling them to feel more 'settled' throughout everyday life. It is also a great tool for advocating for reasonable adjustments in school or the workplace.
